What is the ruling on prayer during the days when menstrual bleeding occurs, then stops for a day or more, and what is the ruling on the brown discharge that appears after ghusl?

If a menstruating woman experiences days of purity (tahr) interspersed within her menstrual cycle, the jurisprudential schools (madhahib) differ on this matter. The Malikis and Hanbalis consider her to be in the state of purity (tahir), whereas the Shafi'is and Hanafis consider all those days to be menstruation.

As for brown discharge (kudra) that appears after purity and ritual bathing (ghusl), the Hanbalis and Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah do not consider it menstruation. They cite the hadith of Umm Atiyyah: "We did not consider yellowish or brownish discharge after ritual bathing to be anything." However, others consider it menstruation, basing their view on Allah’s Almighty statement: "And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is a discomfort'," and Aishah’s statement: "Do not rush until you see the white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda')."
