Is it sufficient for a student of knowledge—who desires salvation—to memorize a jurisprudential text such as "Zād al-Mustaqniʿ" along with its commentary "Ash-Sharḥ al-Mumtiʿ" by Sheikh Ibn ʿUthaymīn, in order to encompass everything that concerns him in fiqh, and does the aforementioned commentary favor certain opinions and mention the preponderant among them?
Many hadiths have been narrated regarding the virtue of seeking knowledge, among them: that seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim, that whoever traverses a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise, that angels lower their wings in pleasure for the seeker of knowledge, and that everything in the heavens and the earth seeks forgiveness for him, and that the superiority of the scholar over the worshipper is like the superiority of the moon over all other stars, and that scholars are the inheritors of the prophets.
We advise the student of knowledge to strive diligently in seeking knowledge. As for the commentary in question, it is one of the best contemporary books that has compiled many jurisprudential issues, with accuracy in correction and preference, but it is not without some shortcomings.
It is preferable for the student to combine memorizing the foundational texts of knowledge with studying various commentaries.
