What are the texts (Mutun) that a student of knowledge should memorize, progressing from creed (Aqidah) to the next field? And should he memorize the text and its explanation, or should he finish memorizing the texts first, then move on to their explanations?

A student of knowledge begins with what is obligatory upon him individually, such as learning creed and what Allah has enjoined upon him of prayer. A beginner in seeking knowledge studies the fundamentals of faith from the Book and the Sunnah, or Ahl as-Sunnah's Creed by Al-Uthaymeen, then Kitab at-Tawhid by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and Al-Wasitiyyah by Ibn Taymiyyah with easy commentaries, such as those of Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen. To these are added Sheikh Omar Sulaiman Al-Ashqar's collection on creed. After mastering that, he consults the major books, such as Sharh at-Tahawiyyah and the books of Ibn Taymiyyah, then the concise books of jurisprudence. Understanding the meanings is more emphasized, and combining it with memorization is more enduring, while delving into extensive commentaries may not be beneficial for the beginner.
