The answer

is obligatory on dates once they reach a نصاب (minimum threshold) of five awsuq (وسق). The zakat is one-tenth (العشر) if irrigated by rainwater, and half of one-tenth (نصف العشر) if irrigated by machinery. It is preferable to pay zakat from the dates themselves before selling them, but it is permissible to pay their value after selling the produce. Expenses are not deducted from the price of the fruit when paying zakat.
