The Jews of Medina consisted of three tribes: Banu Qaynuqa, Banu al-Nadir, and Banu Qurayza. Their numbers ranged from hundreds to approximately a thousand fighters, in addition to women and children. There were other Jews living in other regions of the Arabian Peninsula, such as Fadak, Tayma, Wadi al-Qura, Dumat al-Jandal, and Khaybar, where their numbers in Khaybar were estimated in the thousands, possibly reaching ten thousand fighters. The Jews settled in Medina because they knew of the imminent advent of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and that it would be the place of his migration.
