How authentic is the Hadith of Ibn Abbas: "This world has been placed in the hands of the Angel of Death like a bowl from which he takes what he wills, if death is decreed for someone without hardship, and his stride is between the East and the West"?
No trace of this wording has been found in the books of Ahl al- (Sunni scholars), but its meaning was conveyed by Ibn Abbas and Mujahid. It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Angel of Death's ability to [reach] the people of the East and the West, and [those in] darkness and light, and the seas, is like a man's ability over his dining table, from which he takes whatever he wishes. This chain of narration is weak. Ibn Jarir and Abu al-Shaykh narrated from Mujahid concerning the verse, "Say, 'The Angel of Death, who has been entrusted with you, will take your souls; then to your Lord you will be returned'" (Quran 32:11), that he said: "The earth was gathered for him, and made for him like a bowl from which he takes wherever he wishes."
