Is a man considered an apostate from Islam, requiring him to renew his Shahadah, perform ghusl, and renew his marriage contract, if he tells his wife in a moment of anger, "I am a Jew," while remaining a Muslim in his heart and outwardly? And is the wife sinful if she refuses to share his bed out of fear that he may have apostatized?

Whoever says he is a Jew, without being coerced and intending it, has apostatized from Islam, and he must be separated from his wife immediately. As for the ruling on his ghusl (definition) (ritual bath) upon returning to Islam, there is a difference of opinion among scholars. Some obligated it, based on prophetic hadiths such as the Prophet's command to Thumamah ibn Uthal and Qais ibn Asim to perform ghusl upon their conversion to Islam, and what Sa'd ibn Mu'adh and Usaid ibn Hudair did. Others did not obligate it (like the Hanafis and Shafi'is) and considered it desirable due to the lack of widespread transmission of the command for it, despite the large number of converts. The preponderant opinion is the obligation of ghusl. Therefore, he must return to Islam and perform ghusl.
