Does the ijtihad of contemporary scholars abrogate the consensus of the Companions?

If a consensus (Ijma') is reached, it is a legal proof that must be followed, and it is not permissible to deviate from it. Disobeying consensus may even lead to disbelief (kufr) if the consensus is definitive and beyond doubt, because disobeying a definitive consensus is like disobeying a clear text. Once consensus is established, it is binding upon all Muslims.
