What is the ruling on one who claims to have seen Allah in a dream, and is it true that Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal saw Him more than a hundred times?
It is permissible for a person to see his Lord in a dream, and it can be a true vision, but it does not resemble reality, for there is nothing like Him, glorified be He. One may hear a voice, but there will be no specific image. It has been reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw his Lord in a dream. As for seeing Allah while awake, this does not happen to anyone in this world, neither to prophets nor to others. It is the greatest bliss for the people of Paradise. If a person sees something in a dream that contradicts Islamic law, then let him know that he has seen a devil and not his Lord.
