How is it possible to honor a tyrannical father who caused psychological problems for his son and seeks to control him?

A father's abuse or neglect does not negate his rights over his children. It is obligatory to honor him and obey him in what is good. This does not mean he controls every aspect of his son's life; rather, obedience is in matters that benefit the father and do not harm the child, within the bounds of Islamic law and custom. Honoring one's parents is among the best deeds and most beloved to Allah, for the father is the middle gate of Paradise. Strive to honor your parents, overlook what has passed, and draw closer to Allah through faith and righteous deeds.
