What is the ruling on my refraining from visiting my husband's family in our new home, while my husband and children continue to visit them in their home, due to their previous ill-treatment of me?
A wife does not have the right to prevent her husband from hosting his parents in their home, because their mere visit poses no harm and may even be a cause for improving the relationship between them. The wife should be gracious in hosting them, even if they have previously wronged her, for reciprocating evil with good brings affection and repels the whispers of Satan. There is much good and great reward in forgiving those who do wrong. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah does not increase a servant who forgives except in honor." A wife's kindness towards her husband's family and her overlooking their mistakes are among the noble morals that weigh heavily in her favor and increase her husband's love for her.
