What are the detailed legal proofs from the Qur’an, Sunnah, and scholarly opinions that refute the specious argument of those who claim that music is permissible, based on their interpretation of Allah’s saying: "And among the people is he who buys diverting speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment," by asserting that this verse does not apply to them because they are not misled from the way of Allah, and due to the existence of Qur’an reciters who chant with music, considering the Hadith: "They will make lawful fornication, silk, alcoholic drinks, and musical instruments"?

It is well-known from the madhhabs of the imams that all musical instruments and wind instruments are forbidden, except for what has been exempted, such as the duff (tambourine) at weddings, and the drum of warriors, hunters, and caravans. The lam in "li-yudilla" (that he may lead astray) in the verse from Surat Luqman, "li-yudilla 'an sabil Allah" (to lead [people] astray from the path of Allah), is for consequence, not for causation. Singing discourages following one's whims and desires, and it commands chastity, avoiding the lusts of the soul and the causes of error, and it forbids following the footsteps of Satan. Ibn al-Qayyim explained that singing corrupts the heart, and if the heart is corrupted, hypocrisy surges within it. The statements of the Companions, the Tabi'un, and the scholars have concurred on this.
