What is the ruling on songs accompanied by music?

Scholars, including the four Imams and their followers, are unanimous that Ijma' (consensus) is a legal proof. Jurists and verifiers have agreed on the prohibition of string instruments and musical instruments due to the amusement and corruption they entail; whoever mentions a differing opinion has erred or been overcome by their desires. A number of scholars have reported the Ijma' on this matter. If the consensus of scholars on the prohibition of singing is established, then the matter is clear. If it is not established, then the prohibition does not rely solely on Ijma', but on evidence from the Quran, Sunnah, and the sayings of the Salaf. As for using the Hadith of the two young girls as proof for permitting singing, it is a misguided interpretation. In that Hadith, the Prophet (peace be upon him) approved Abu Bakr's description of singing as "the flute of Satan," and the permissibility mentioned in the Hadith is restricted to the singing of a young, non-professional girl, on Eid days, reciting verses about bravery and war. The pronouncement of the prohibition of singing and music does not only come from the principle of sadd ad-dhara'i' (blocking the means to evil), but is based on explicit evidence from the Quran and Sunnah.
