The answer

The intended meaning of "the time of menstruation" is the time it is possible for it to occur. The rule for this, if the blood returns after stopping, is that the total days of bleeding and the days in between where it stopped should not exceed 15 days (which is the maximum duration of menstruation according to the majority of scholars). If this condition is met, then it is considered one menstrual period.

However, if there are 15 days or more between the beginning of the current menstruation and the end of the previous one according to the majority of scholars, and 13 days or more according to the Hanbalis (which is the minimum period of purity between two menstruations), then this is considered a second menstruation.

So, any blood a woman sees during the possible time (described above) is menstruation, and anything outside of it is Istihada (non-menstrual bleeding).

Any blood a woman sees after her habitual period has ended is menstruation as long as it does not exceed 15 days. If it exceeds that, then it is Istihada.

If a woman sees yellowish or brownish discharge after her habitual period has ended: - If it is continuous with the blood, it is menstruation as long as it is within the possible time frame. - If she sees purity and then sees yellowish or brownish discharge after her habitual period has ended, it is not menstruation, but rather it falls under the rulings of Istihada.

These rulings do not differ based on the characteristic of the blood, as long as it is the known color of blood. The characteristic of the blood is only considered if the woman is experiencing Istihada.
