Is it permissible to fast the make-up days from last Ramadan during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah with the sole intention of making up those days?
There is no objection to fasting to make up for missed days during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. Rather, it is hoped that the reward will be greater because the fasting occurs during these virtuous days. The early Muslims (Salaf) differed regarding the disliked nature of making up fasts during these days, and the more correct view is that it is not disliked. This view is narrated from Umar, may Allah be pleased with him. Ibn Rajab mentioned that Umar believed making up fasts during these days was better, while Ali used to forbid it. The prohibition was explained by saying that making up fasts would cause one to miss the virtue of voluntary fasting. However, it was also said that by performing it, one attains the virtue of voluntary fasting. Al-Mardawi, in "Al-Insaf," affirmed the view that it is not disliked.
