Are the Quranic verses that contain attributes of Allah – such as: "And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor," "Blessed is He in whose hand is the dominion," "Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends as He wills," "The Day when the shin will be uncovered," "Oh, my regret over what I neglected concerning the side of Allah," and "And your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank" – are these verses clear and to be taken at their apparent meaning?

Verses on the divine attributes are considered muḥkam (clear and unambiguous) if one seeks to understand their meaning (interpretation), and mutashābih (ambiguous) whose true nature God alone comprehends if one seeks to understand their modality (ta’wīl). The Salaf affirm the meanings of the attributes while entrusting their modality [to God]. Ambiguity can be relative for some people but not others, and it is not necessarily the case that all verses on the divine attributes are ambiguous in the sense that their meaning is unknowable. Denying knowledge of ta’wīl does not imply denying knowledge of the meaning.
