How essential are the objectives of Sharia (Maqasid al-Sharia) for a mujtahid in understanding devotional rulings?

Knowledge of the objectives (Maqasid) and secrets of Sharia is important for the Mujtahid (Islamic jurist capable of independent reasoning) because it contributes to understanding the Sharia texts, deducing correct rulings, and preferring some evidences over others in case of conflict. It also enables him to address new occurrences for which no explicit texts exist. Knowledge of the Maqasid helps the Mujtahid differentiate between devotional acts of worship ('Ibadat ta'abbudiyyah) and those with discernible reasons ('Ibadat mu'allalah), thus preventing errors in applying rulings, for a reasoned ruling is not suitable for a devotional act, and a devotional act is not suitable for a reasoned one.
