Is it permissible for a woman in postpartum bleeding (nifas) to fast if she sees a tiny, barely visible spot of blood after her bleeding has apparently ceased during the postpartum period, and is she required to make up (qada’) the fasts or offer expiation (fidyah)?

If a woman in postpartum bleeding (nifas) sees blood within the forty days after childbirth, it is considered nifas blood, which prohibits fasting and prayer. However, if bloody spots reappear after forty days and are merely spots with complete dryness of the area, they are not considered menstruation (hayd) by the majority of scholars and are counted as irregular bleeding (dam fasad) that does not prohibit fasting and prayer. But if the returning blood continues for a day and a night after the forty days, it is considered menstruation if it coincides with her usual cycle. Some scholars hold that the maximum period for nifas is forty days, while others believe it is sixty days.
