If a woman in postpartum bleeding (nifas) becomes pure within the forty days and fasts, then the blood returns to her within the forty days, her fast is valid. However, she must refrain from prayer and fasting until she becomes pure or completes the forty days. Once she completes the forty days, ritual bathing (ghusl) becomes obligatory for her. She should perform ablution (wudu') for each prayer at the time of each prayer until the bleeding ceases, and her husband may enjoy her. If the bleeding after the forty days coincides with her customary menstrual period, she should consider it menstruation and refrain from prayer and fasting.
