Is it obligatory for a wife to pray and fast during the forty-day period of postpartum bleeding (nifas) if the bleeding stops and then resumes?
The maximum duration of postpartum bleeding () is forty days. If a woman becomes pure during these forty days, she should perform (ritual bath), pray, fast, and her husband may approach her. If the postpartum bleeding stops intermittently before the forty days, she is considered in a state of nifas only during the time the blood is flowing. Upon seeing one of the two signs of purity (dryness or the white discharge), she is considered pure; she should perform ghusl, pray, and her husband may approach her. The ruling regarding prayer, fasting, and intercourse is tied to the presence of blood: if blood is present, she is in a state of nifas, and the aforementioned acts are forbidden to her. If she sees purity during the postpartum period, ghusl, prayer, and fasting become obligatory, and intercourse becomes permissible.
