In Arabic, "ba'l" (بعل) linguistically means: husband, master, and lord, and also refers to plants that are watered by their roots without human irrigation. In the Holy Quran, it has appeared in the sense of 'husband' in many verses. It also appeared in the sense of 'deity' or 'idol' in the words of Allah Almighty: "Do you call upon Ba'l and forsake the Best of creators?" (Surat As-Saffat: 125). It has been mentioned that "Ba'l" in this verse is the name of an idol that belonged to the people of Baalbek in the Levant.
