Is fasting the month of Sha'ban obligatory? And is it to be made up if one breaks the fast?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is recommended to fast frequently during the month of Sha'ban, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him). However, fasting it is not obligatory, and there is no make-up fast due for anyone who did not fast it at all, as it is a supererogatory act. As for someone who began a supererogatory fast in it and then intentionally broke it, there is no make-up fast due upon him, according to the preponderant opinion, because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The person observing a supererogatory fast is his own master; if he wishes, he fasts, and if he wishes, he breaks his fast." Nevertheless, making up the fast is more cautious, to avoid the differing opinions of some jurists.
