It is permissible to fast the entirety of Sha'ban, as there are narrations indicating that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to fast it completely. This does not contradict the prohibition of fasting after the middle of Sha'ban or a day or two before Ramadan. The prohibition is understood to apply to those who fast with the intention of being cautious for Ramadan. Fasting is permitted for those who have a regular habit, such as fasting one day and breaking the fast the next, or fasting on Mondays and Thursdays.
