The question

What is the ruling on working for a company that guarantees credit facilities (loans, overdrafts, letters of guarantee, letters of credit) from Islamic and non-Islamic banks for small and medium-sized enterprises in exchange for a commission calculated on the principal value of the facility, excluding bank interest? And is it obligatory to leave the job immediately if the work is impermissible?

The answer

If the company's line of business is commercial insurance based on (excessive uncertainty) and (gambling), then it is not permissible to work in it, as this involves direct participation in sin or assisting in it. This is based on Allah's saying: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." (Quran 5:2) And the Prophet (peace be upon him) cursed the one who consumes riba (interest), the one who pays it, the one who writes it down, and its two witnesses. If you are compelled to work there for your own sustenance or for those whose sustenance is your responsibility, then you may remain until you find another job. However, if the insurance is cooperative and mutual (takafuli), then there is no harm in working there.
