What is the ruling on plucking eyelashes?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The hair that grows on the eyelids (eyelashes) has benefit and beauty. Removing it is a clear disfigurement and mutilation. Scholars have stipulated that removing it from another person is a crime. The Shafi'is and Malikis hold that it entails a discretionary compensatory payment (hukūmah), while the Hanafis and Hanbalis consider it to entail a fixed blood money (diyah muqaddarah) amounting to one-quarter of the full blood money for each eyelid. Removing the eyelashes is impermissible due to the loss of benefit and beauty it entails. If the intent is plucking the eyebrows, then that is namṣ, which is forbidden in Sharia.
