Does divorce take effect with the statement: "Go to your father's house, and I will finalize the divorce procedures, and you are divorced," along with the intention of divorce, and what are the implications of that?

A husband's statement to his wife, "Go to your father's house, and I will complete the divorce procedures and you will receive your rights," is considered a metaphorical divorce (kinayah) that takes effect with the intention. If he intended divorce by it, then it has occurred; otherwise, it is a promise that is not binding. It is not permissible to expel the wife from the home before the completion of her 'iddah (waiting period), due to the Almighty's saying: "Do not expel them from their homes," and her maintenance is obligatory. It is permissible to take her back if this was the first or second divorce, even without her consent, and it is from the Sunnah to have witnesses for the reconciliation. We advise the husband to be deliberate and not to rush into divorce, and to take her back if it has occurred, especially if there are children or if she is righteous, and to be patient with her mistakes, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another."
