What is the ruling on dealing with a brother and his wife who have abandoned prayer and live with us in the same house?
Abandoning prayer is a grave evil, and one who abandons it is a disbeliever, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Between a man and polytheism and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer."
One who abandons prayer must be advised and the danger of his action explained to him, and he must be commanded to pray, based on the words of the Almighty: "And enjoin prayer upon your family and be steadfast therein," and His saying: "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones."
If he persists in abandoning prayer, then it is obligatory to separate from him in dwelling, if possible, based on the words of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever associates with a polytheist and lives with him is like him."
