Is it permissible to work on carving arches around a temple, knowing that refusing to do so may lead to losing the job?

It is not permissible for a Muslim to work in building or decorating churches and similar structures, for in doing so there is assistance in shirk (polytheism) and disobedience, and an exaltation of their false religion. The perpetrator should be disciplined unless he apologizes due to ignorance. An exception is made for a genuine case of necessity where the Muslim cannot find any other work.
