The answer

Not loving one's wife and contemplating divorcing her does not constitute a divorce, for one is not held accountable for inner thoughts. Divorce only occurs through an explicit utterance or an implicit statement accompanied by intention. The husband is not obligated to stay with his wife or separate from her. Rather, if he can be patient with her and treat her well, he should do so, especially if she possesses good qualities or if he has children with her. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." Homes are not built solely on love; a marriage may continue without affection, or affection may develop later. However, he is permitted to divorce her if he is harmed by her companionship or fears that he may neglect her rights.
