Is marriage without the knowledge of the parents considered valid? And is their lack of knowledge considered disobedience to parents that angers Allah? And is meeting a man and sitting with him considered unlawful sexual intercourse (zina)?

The preponderant view is that material and social disparities do not prevent marriage; rather, what is considered is competence in religion and character. Parents should hasten the marriage of their daughter if a man of religion and good character proposes to her. A guardian is a condition for the validity of marriage, and it is not permissible for a woman to marry herself without the permission of her family. If the family refuses to marry their daughter to a competent suitor, she can refer the matter to the Sharia judge. It is forbidden to get acquainted and establish relationships between unrelated men and women, and this relationship must be severed until a legitimate marriage takes place.
