Can Jinn be seen with the eye or with the soul, and can the soul see them as apparitions?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The jinn can be seen in transformed images, such as human or animal forms, and this is what the general public sees. However, as for seeing them in their original form, the majority of scholars prohibit this for anyone except prophets, based on the Almighty's saying: ﴿Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you do not see them﴾ [Al-A'raf: 27]. In fact, Al-Shafi'i rejected the testimony of anyone who claimed to have seen them. Meanwhile, another group holds that seeing them is restricted to prophets only, and a third group completely denies the ability of humans to see jinn. A fourth group believes in the possibility of seeing them in their original forms for prophets and for those whom Allah specifically designates for that. The most preponderant opinion is that prophets can see them absolutely, and others can see them when they take on other forms, and this is supported by texts and experience. As for seeing them as mere phantoms, it has been said that this is not a reality but an imagination. However, authentic evidence proves that seeing them is a reality, not an imagination.
