The answer

The Islam of Wa'il ibn Hujr, may Allah be pleased with him, occurred in the Year of Delegations (the ninth year of the Hijra), when he arrived as part of the delegation from Hadramawt in Yemen to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Kathir alluded to this in the events of that year, which was named the Year of Delegations due to the large number of delegations that came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to declare their Islam. Al-'Azim Abadi mentioned that Wa'il ibn Hujr came and stayed with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, for a few days, then returned to his people, and narrated hadiths from him.
