The default type of divorce is revocable, except in specific cases where it becomes irrevocable. These cases include a divorce that completes the three divorces, divorce before consummation, and divorce in exchange for money (where the wife ransoms herself with money). A revocable divorce keeps the divorced woman in the status of a wife, obligating the husband to provide for her maintenance and lodging until the end of her iddah (definition) (waiting period). As for the amount of mut'ah (compensatory gift) for the divorced woman, scholars differ in their estimations. The preponderant opinion is that it depends on the husband's financial situation. In case of disagreement, the matter is referred to a judge for arbitration. If the husband does not give his wife her full rights, she has the right to demand them, and if he refuses, she can refer her case to the judiciary.
