Is it better for a marriage to continue with feelings of jealousy and pain, or for a divorce to take place, given that there is a daughter between the spouses?
If the wife is righteous, she should not be divorced. One can marry another if there is a need, but the home should not be destroyed and the family scattered merely for a fleeting desire that may be followed by regret. Ibn al-Jawzi reported that a man might imagine another woman to be more beautiful than his wife, but upon marrying her, he discovers flaws he had not considered, which leads to boredom and a desire for something else. The second wife might lack religiosity, intelligence, affection, or management skills. One should consider the good aspects of his wife and balance her good deeds with her bad deeds. Allah Almighty said: "And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good." (An-Nisa:19). And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A believing man should not hate a believing woman; if he dislikes one of her characteristics, he will be pleased with another." Al-Nawawi explained that if he finds a disliked characteristic in her, he will find a pleasing one, such as her religiosity, beauty, chastity, or gentleness.
