Abandoning, forsaking, and shunning a Muslim are forbidden, as are contention and enmity, unless there is a legitimate Shar'i justification for it, such as if the person is an innovator (mubtadi'), or if one fears harm from them in religious or worldly matters. Abandonment (hajr) is permissible if the harm cannot be removed except by it, for often a beautiful separation is better than harmful association.
