What is the ruling on estrangement (mutual abandonment) if it is better for both parties?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the dispute is abandonment (hajr), then it is not permissible for more than three days, unless there is a fear of religious or worldly harm that cannot be avoided. The basic principle in Islamic law is the prohibition of abandonment and estrangement among Muslims. However, if abandonment is more conducive to preventing religious or worldly harm, or to deterring a disobedient person from their disobedience, then abandonment is permissible at that time, to the extent of the benefit.
