How authentic is the Hadith: "Whoever wishes people to stand up for him, let him take his seat in Hellfire," and what is its interpretation?

The aforementioned Hadith is authentic, and its wording is: "Whoever loves that men stand up for him, let him take his place in the Fire." Its meaning is that whoever is pleased with people standing up for him in reverence, let him prepare for himself a place in Hellfire. Scholars have differed on the ruling regarding people standing up for a man. Some, like Imam al-Nawawi, permitted it if it was for a clear virtue, and for righteousness, honor, and respect, not for ostentation. Others, however, forbade it. Al-Ayni reported from Abu al-Walid Ibn Rushd that standing (for someone) is of four types: forbidden (for arrogance), disliked (for fear of entering into arrogance), permissible (for righteousness, without imitating tyrants), and recommended (for someone returning from a journey, or for congratulation or condolence). Al-Ghazali stated that standing by way of glorification is disliked, but by way of righteousness and honor is not disliked, and this is what Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar approved of.
