What is the ruling on looking at non-mahram women, and is the hadith authentic that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at a woman and said: "If one of you sees a woman, let him go to his wife"?

Intentionally looking at non-mahram women is forbidden, based on the Almighty’s saying: ﴿Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.﴾ [An-Nur: 30]. As for an accidental glance, meaning the first unintentional look, there is no sin in it, but one must immediately avert the gaze, as the Prophet ﷺ commanded in Jarir’s hadith: “He commanded me to avert my gaze.” And the hadith narrated by Muslim from Jabir ibn Abdullah, that the Prophet ﷺ said: “If any of you sees a woman, let him go to his wife, for that will repel what is in his heart,” is a means of treating an accidental glance by calming the resulting desire through lawful intercourse.
