Is it obligatory for the questioner to distance herself from her mother, who reveals her secrets and portrays her negatively to others, knowing that distancing herself in the past brought her comfort, but she fears God's wrath if she severs ties with her?

Filial piety towards one's mother is among the most obligatory duties and greatest acts of devotion, while disobeying her is among the gravest sins. If the mother has bad manners, it is not permissible to abandon her or mistreat her. Rather, one must associate with her in kindness, as Allah Almighty has commanded, even if the parents are polytheists and command polytheism. It is recommended to continue showing her piety and kindness, and not to inform her of matters that might cause problems, while advising her gently and supplicating for her guidance. There is no objection to keeping a distance from her if it does not involve cutting ties and if no discord is feared, while continuously drawing near to her and showing her kindness.
