The question

What is the authenticity of the message circulating due to the solar eclipse, which states: "The sun of the year 1434 AH will bid us farewell while eclipsed in an awe-inspiring scene – Your mercy, O Allah, be upon us – How can we bid farewell to our year while You are angry with us; so increase in repentance and seeking forgiveness – perhaps Allah will have mercy on us"?

The answer

There is no harm in reminding people of Allah's wrath during a lunar eclipse and urging them to repent and seek forgiveness. It is authentically reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded prayer, supplication, seeking forgiveness, and giving charity during a solar eclipse. He said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, by which He frightens His servants." This indicates that a solar eclipse is a frightening sign from Allah the Almighty to His servants, and not a wrath directed at them. This frightening sign may be a warning of a punishment whose causes have materialized. For this reason, people were commanded during an eclipse to rush to prayer, supplication, seeking forgiveness, giving charity, and proclaiming Allah's greatness, due to the warning and fright contained therein regarding punishments.
