Why did the Prophet (peace be upon him) pray the eclipse prayer even though it is a natural phenomenon that causes no harm?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded prayer, supplication, and charity during solar and lunar eclipses. These are two signs among the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse for the death or life of anyone. Muslims must do what they have been commanded to do when an eclipse occurs, even if they know about it beforehand, without being concerned with monitoring eclipse timings. An eclipse may be a sign or a cause for the occurrence of evil, and Allah may, through the prayers and supplications of Muslims, avert evils from people that none but He knows. A Muslim must submit to the judgment of Allah and act according to His law. Lunar and solar eclipses are two signs by which Allah frightens His servants and reminds them of the Hereafter. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions used to hasten to prayer and pray when they occurred.
