Is it permissible to eat the placenta from a slaughtered animal?
The Maliki jurists have three opinions regarding eating the placenta: absolute prohibition, absolute permissibility, and a third opinion that follows the status of the child. The preferred view according to the Shafi'is is absolute prohibition, as it is a part separated from a living being and is therefore considered carrion. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Whatever is cut from a living animal is carrion." However, if a pregnant sheep is slaughtered, it is permissible to eat its fetus.
