What is incumbent upon one who swore an oath multiple times to do or to refrain from something, but then did not fulfill his oath, and does not remember the number of oaths?

If the oath was sworn by one of Allah's Names or Attributes, and with the intention of making an oath, then you owe expiation for each oath you broke if the oaths were multiple and concerned different matters, or if the matter sworn upon was one and the oath was repeated after breaking it. However, if the matter sworn upon was one and the oaths were repeated before breaking it, or if the matters sworn upon were different and the oath was a single one, then only one expiation is required. If you do not remember the number of oaths you broke, then you must offer expiation for what you believe will clear your conscience. The expiation for an oath is to feed ten needy persons, or clothe them, or free a slave. If you cannot find any of these, then you must fast for three days. One should not take many oaths.
