What is the ruling on frequent swearing by oaths, and how is expiation calculated if the oaths are different or a single oath, and what do you do if you are unable to contact a charity?

It is advisable to refrain from excessive swearing by Allah, as it shows audacity towards Allah and a lack of reverence for Him, as stated in His verses: {And do not make [the name of] Allah an excuse in your oaths} and {And do not obey every [habitual] swearer, contemptible}.

If the questioner has broken multiple oaths concerning various matters, she is obligated to offer an expiation for each oath, according to the majority of scholars. However, others hold that a single expiation suffices. Those who advocate for multiple expiations argue that each oath is independent.

The expiation for an oath is to feed ten needy persons, or to clothe them, or to free a slave. If she is unable to do these three, then she must fast. It is not permissible to begin fasting if one is capable of performing the first three types of expiation.

If she is unaware of the number of oaths for which expiation is required, she should take the lesser number. So, if she doubts between five or six expiations, she owes five, because the default is absolution of liability. However, it is more cautious to offer expiation for the doubted day. If she doubts whether the oath was made at all, then nothing is required of her, as the default is absolution of liability.
