What is the ruling on asking about the location of Allah, and is it part of faith to say that Allah is in the heavens, above His Throne, or does this lead to anthropomorphism (tajseem) and resemblance (tashbeeh)?

The question "Where is Allah?" is not a cause for doubt; rather, it is a quest to know the truth. The sin of error falls upon the one who gives a fatwa without knowledge, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever is given a fatwa without knowledge, its sin is upon the one who gave the fatwa."

The correct position is that this question should not be prevented; and its answer is that Allah is in heaven, meaning absolute exaltedness. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked a slave girl, "Where is Allah?" She replied, "In heaven," and he said, "Emancipate her, for she is a believer." What further confirms this is His saying, the Almighty: "Do you feel secure that He who is in the heaven would not cause the earth to swallow you, and suddenly it would sway? Or do you feel secure that He who is in the heaven would not send against you a storm of stones, and you would know how was My warning?"
