The first to lay down the rules of prosody (ilm al-'arud) was Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad Al-Farahidi. Before him, poets composed poetry by intuition. Al-Khalil was pious, humble, and of great stature. He prayed to God to grant him knowledge that no one had preceded him in, and thus, knowledge of prosody was opened to him. It is said that he was inspired by the rhythm of hammers or the sound of the footsteps of camels and horses. He was born in the year 100 AH and died between 160 and 170 AH.
