Did anyone claim prophethood before Islam?

The claim of prophethood is one of the gravest sins and a lie against Allah Almighty. No one claiming prophethood was known before Islam, except that some Arabs, like Umayyah ibn Abi al-Salt, expected the appearance of a prophet due to their reading of ancient scriptures. Umayyah thought he was the awaited prophet. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sent, Umayyah refrained from following him out of shame before his people, after he had told them that he was the prophet.
