Does studying languages affect young people and lead to their heedlessness?

The Sharia (definition) has permitted the study of languages, and some scholars have considered it a communal obligation (fard kifaya). However, one should not become preoccupied with other languages to the detriment of the Arabic language, as it is the language of the Qur’an and the best of languages. Similarly, it is not permissible to become preoccupied with any of that to the exclusion of learning sound doctrine (aqeedah), the rulings of the Sharia, and its etiquette. If a person learns what is obligatory for him to learn regarding his religion, then studying other languages will not affect him, provided his companionship is good and his environment is sound.
