What is the ruling on the inquirer's marriage to her cousin, given the conflicting statements of her grandmother (who breastfed) and the young man's mother regarding the grandmother's breastfeeding of the young man along with the inquirer's maternal aunt, and the resulting doubts about the validity of the breastfeeding?

The jurists differed regarding the quorum of testimony for suckling (rada'a). The Hanafis hold that suckling is established by the testimony of two men or one man and two women, and it is not established by the testimony of women alone. As for the Malikis, they accept the testimony of two women if the suckling was well-known before the marriage contract. The Shafi'is are of the opinion that suckling is established by the testimony of four women or two men or one man and two women. Whereas the Hanbalis believe that suckling is established by the testimony of a single trustworthy woman.

Based on this difference, the testimony of the grandmother and the maternal aunt does not establish suckling according to the majority of jurists, unless one of them is among those whose testimony is accepted and she testifies to five or more sucklings. The Hanbalis, however, preponderated the acceptance of a single woman's testimony. It is stipulated for the establishment of suckling that it must have occurred within the first two years of the child's life.
