How should I deal with my aunt and her daughter who cause me distress after my brother married them, and is it permissible for me to complain frequently to my mother and insult and curse them because I feel wronged and oppressed, and is it permissible for me to suffice with visiting them monthly for the sake of kinship ties instead of weekly visits to preserve my psychological well-being?

The Shari'ah has made it obligatory to maintain ties of kinship, even with those who sever them; this includes the maternal aunt. There is no objection to reducing visits as long as it does not amount to severing kinship ties. It is permissible to mention the faults of relatives for the purpose of consultation and seeking advice, provided that it is limited to the extent of need without backbiting. Abusing and insulting them is permissible if it is due to their wrongdoing and to the extent of the evil within them, otherwise, it is forbidden. It is preferable to turn away from backbiting, abusing, and insulting them, to think well of them, and to respond to evil with good; as Allah Almighty says: "Repel [evil] with that which is better, and immediately your enemy will become as devoted a friend." Forgiveness increases one's honor and through it, one attains Allah's forgiveness. The maternal aunt holds a special status in terms of dutifulness, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The maternal aunt is in the position of the mother."
